29.06.2010. On this day our parish celebrates its titular feast of St Peter and St Paul. It is recommended today that each of us receives the Sacraments of Penance and Eucharist so that we will make this day holy not only in our town, but also in our own personal lives. As a fruit of the spiritual affiliation with the Basilica of St Peter in the Vatican and St Paul Outside the Walls in Rome, today whoever shall visit our Basilica can receive the Plenary Indulgence under some requisitions. May all the people of Nadur, whoever shall visit our town on this day and all our readers have a nice feast. |

26.06.2010. On this day, our parish celebrates the 43rd anniversary since our Collegiate church was elevated to the high dignity of Minor Basilica by H.H. Pope Paul VI in 1967. Also, this year our parish marks the centenary of Archpriest Can. John Camilleri’s death (photo), which occurred in 1910. Archpriest Camilleri’s time was indeed one of the most colourful moments in our parish history. Born in 1830, and ordained priest in 1856, he was chosen as Parish Priest of the Assumption of Our Lady in Żebbuġ in 1863, and in 1865 he was chosen as the Parish Priest of the Nativity of Our Lady in Xagħra. Following false accusations against Nadur Parish Priest Fr John Baptist Grech, Fr Camilleri was chosen as the Parish Priest of our parish in 1881. Immediately he began working in the new ministry, as he had previously done in the other parishes. As he did in both Żebbuġ and Xagħra, he brought over from Marseilles in France our titular statue of St Peter and St Paul in 1882. He was responsible for the building of the Parish House, which today stands as the Maritime Museum, and worked hard in the pastoral aspects of the parish as well as started the extension project of the church. However, during his time, our church, already Matrice for Qala and Għajnsielem, was elevated to Archpresbyteral in 1893, and Fr Camilleri assumed the office of Archpriest from now on. In 1894, another milestone occurred. The church was elevated as Collegiate by Pope Leo XIII with unique and rare privileges. From now on the Archpriest also assumes the title of Canon. All this was not easy; it was a hard task, managed bravely by Archpriest Camilleri and our ancestors. In addition to these privileges, the Chapter was later allowed to use the Silk Cappa Magna or Pellicca in 1951 and in 1963 the Archpriest was given the right to wear the Mitre. Following Archpriest Camilleri’s death, his nephew Can. Martin Camilleri was selected as the second Archpriest. To commemorate this event, today two delegates from Xagħra in the essence of Archpriest Mgr Carmel Refalo and Can. Reuben Micallef, Archpriest of Żebbuġ co-celebrated along with our clergy and Mgr John Bosco Gauci, Vicar General of our diocese in the second day of the triduum. During the mass, both parishes laid a bouquet of flowers at the feet of Archpriest Camilleri’s monument in our Basilica as a sign of respect. |
